Oh, Hollywood. It’s so hard to tell whether Amy Schumer is being genuinely supportive of Anne Hathaway, front runner for the live-action Barbie movie set to hit theaters June 29, 2018, or else there’s something a little, err, plastic in her response.

On the record, Schumer said Hathaway would be a “perfect” Barbie in a well-timed Instagram post sent into the digital world yesterday following news that Hathaway was negotiating a deal to take on the iconic role. (Notably, Schumer was attached to the project months before but pulled out due to “scheduling conflicts.”)

Schumer’s Instagram caption also included the phrase “Hathaway smathaway jkjk” below an image of the actress/comedienne donning large spectacles, Apple ear buds and a hoodie. It’s still up for debate whether Schumer, who was set to re-pen parts of the Barbie script with sister Kim Caramele, was really, super busy or else the incessant trolls who scoffed at her taking on the iconic role had something more to do with leaving the film behind.

As Twitter feeds were flooded by bullying comments about a Schumer Barbie this past March, she used Instagram to respond: “My deepest sympathy goes out to the trolls who are in more pain than we will ever understand. I want to thank them for making it so evident that I am a great choice. It’s that kind of response that let’s you know something’s wrong with our culture and we all need to work together to change it.”
