In all the months since I started this blog – ten if you’re counting – the one thing that’s surprised me most is how supportive and encouraging the creative community can be. Take Lotus, for instance, the innovative designer behind Girl Friday Paper Arts. When we first spoke about a potential Q&A, she told me to keep my answers casual (“pretend we’re chatting over lattes and scones”). Coffee, food and fiction? This girl just got it. LOTUS: TELL ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR WORK AND YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS.
Melissa: I launched little word studio about ten months ago as a digital space to create with words. A few weeks into the site, I started receiving inquiries from artists interested in collaborating on projects. Now, my short stories are inspired by the work of illustrators, graphic designers and professional photographers who hail from all parts of the globe. They send me a photo or a sketch and explain the inspiration behind it. Then, I craft a story around this image and post it to my little word studio.
DID YOU GO TO SCHOOL? OR ARE YOU SELF TAUGHT?
I studied creative writing during college at Columbia University and I have a Masters in Journalism from Northwestern University. But even before my formal training, I was always, always writing. Growing up, I chronicled every awkward triumph and tribulation of my middle and high school years in a bright pink, sticker-covered journal. Yikes.
